HERTZ was founded in 1918 by Walter Jacobs in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
The company began with a fleet of of 12 Ford Model T's. In 1923, Jacobs sold the company to John D. Hertz.

In 1966, HERTZ offered an industry first, introducing the Shelby G.T.350-H, the "Rent-A-Racer".

This was the first time customers had access to high-performance rental cars. HERTZ has since debuted numerous exclusive branded cars, including the 2006 Shelby GT-H, the 2010 Corvette ZHZ, the HERTZ 2013 Chevrolet Camaro SS, the HERTZ Penske Mustang and the 50th Anniversary Mustang - the 2016 HERTZ Shelby GT-H.

In commemoration of HERTZ' 100-Year Anniversary, HERTZ released the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 HERTZ 100 Year Edition, the latest in a history of specialty rental vehicles.
